Northwest Transport Infrastructure: Unlocking Auckland's Growth

Fast, frequent and reliable transport for Auckland's fast-growing northwest—with construction starting from 2027.

Unlocking development potential in Auckland's Northwest

Two major transport projects are set to transform connectivity in one of Auckland's fastest-growing regions.

The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has endorsed Te Ara Hauāuru, a dedicated busway alongside State Highway 16 from Brigham Creek to Auckland's city centre. Transport Minister Chris Bishop announced that construction could commence as early as 2027, with the project set to significantly enhance connectivity, increasing public transport mode share by 9% and supporting both residential and economic development.

Alongside the busway, the North-West Alternative State Highway (ASH) will provide a vital new route for the region. This four-lane expressway from Brigham Creek Road to Waimauku has received business case approval and designation decisions have been completed, with construction expected to start in 2028.

Seven strategically placed stations are planned at Brigham Creek, Westgate, Royal Road, Lincoln Road, Te Atatū, Point Chevalier, and Western Springs.

A new expressway for the northwest

The North-West Alternative State Highway isn't just a road—it's a bold step toward Auckland's transport future. Designed to unlock growth, ease congestion, and connect the fast-growing northwest to the rest of Tāmaki Makaurau.

The project includes major interchanges, park-and-ride stations, and dedicated cycling and walking connections—all designed with rapid transit, resilience, and long-term capacity in mind.

Supporting smart urban development

The northwest is one of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland's fastest-growing areas. Currently home to 90,000 residents—60% of whom commute out of the area—the region is expected to grow by an additional 100,000 people by 2051, along with 40,000 new homes.

This growth is placing increasing pressure on the transport network, with more people travelling to work by car than in any other area of Auckland. A robust and efficient transport network is essential—one that connects people to jobs, education and services quickly and safely.

What This Means for Rua Hills

As the northwest continues to grow, these major infrastructure investments will enhance connectivity and accessibility for communities like Rua Hills. The combination of the Te Ara Hauāuru busway and the Alternative State Highway positions the region for sustainable growth while maintaining quality of life for residents.
