Land earmarked for new high school in Kumeū — building for North-West Auckland’s future

The New Zealand Government has taken a major step forward in planning for future education needs in North-West Auckland, with land now prioritised and designated for a new Kumeū secondary school.

As the population in Auckland's north-western communities continues to grow, delivering key infrastructure — including quality education facilities — is essential to support local communities and future generations.

Designating this site adjacent to Huapai District School reflects a forward-looking approach that aims to give certainty to residents and plan ahead for demand.

Supporting sustainable growth and community needs

The designation of this land under the Resource Management Act 1991 marks a significant milestone in ensuring the area has the education infrastructure it needs as it grows. Education and community advocates have long highlighted the need for more secondary school capacity in the Kumeū-Huapai-Riverhead catchment, one of Auckland’s fastest-expanding urban fringes.

In announcing the decision, Education Minister Hon Erica Stanford said this action is part of a broader programme to deliver more school property for growing communities.

Progressing the planning process

A Notice of Requirement (NoR) has been lodged with Auckland Council to formally designate the site, which will enable future planning and development to proceed as the region grows. The Council’s review of the NoR will follow statutory timelines, with further updates to come later in the year.

What This Means for Rua Hills

The announcement by the New Zealand Government to earmark land for a new Kumeū High School is a strong positive signal for residents of Rua Hills. As North-West Auckland continues to grow, securing a local secondary school site provides long-term education certainty for families, reduces future travel times for students, and reinforces coordinated infrastructure planning in the area. For those building or buying at Rua Hills, it strengthens community appeal, supports family-focused living, and reflects continued government investment in the region’s sustainable growth.

Further updates will be released as planning progresses and more information becomes available.
